Building with nature

Local craftsmen with local experience building with local materials.

Wilderness logistics can be tough. Seasons, weather, access, tides etc.. Ripe opportunity for creative problem solving.

We specialize in working with, not against, nature to keep costs low and maximize the investment in your remote construction projects.

Our off-grid construction services include:

Land Clearing

A single hazard tree, or a whole mess of a blown down forest. We can tread lightly in our xtratuff’s or get right after it with our excavator to clean up your property.

Portable Sawmilling

Don’t let those trees go to waste! We love turning logs into lumber with our portable saw mills. We can make beams, framing boards, and siding from live or dead trees on your property.

Dirtwork & Landscaping

We love working with nature’s building blocks to improve properties. Projects include concrete or metal foundations, pathways, gardens, water features, and more. We supply our own heavy equipment when needed.

Timber Framing

From concept to completion. We design, build, and raise custom timber frame structures. Skilled craftsmen working with local materials to make structures imbued with timeless beauty.

Metal Fabrication

Welding in the wilderness. Steel often plays a part in off-grid construction, or remote repair work. Our metal working skills and equipment keep the projects moving without delays.

Viking Furniture

Functional art born from nature. We craft furniture in a style some describe as rustic industrial modern. #VikingBuilt – our furniture is strong, simple, and soulful. Creations that will be cherished for generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are your rates?

We aim for efficiency and exceptional value when estimating project costs. Our experience working in the Alaskan wilderness can cut costs and scheduling dramatically. Every project is unique and we’ll work with you to put together an estimate or quote. We generally avoid hourly rates since we don’t like rewarding slowness, or penalizing production.

Where do you work?

We are based out of Kachemak Bay area (Near Homer, AK). We have our own live aboard motor sailer, 58′ barge, and smaller support vessels. We are actively looking for remote coastal development projects in the North Gulf Coastal area particularly but open to consider any remote land development projects. Just don’t expect to find us working in the next track home subdivision anytime soon.

What equipment do you have?

We are fortunate to own/operate a variety of useful tools for our work. Our current fleet includes a 16,000lb and 3,000lb Excavators, 12,000lb skid steer, portable saw mills of the band and blade variety, boats and barges ranging from 9′ to 58′, and a few conex containers worth of smaller machines and hand tools. But most importantly – creative minds in passionate craftsmen with healthy backs and love for the wilderness.

What kind of availability do you have?

Sometimes we are trying to fill the cooler with little fish, and sometimes we are butchering a moose. Off-grid construction projects come in all shapes and sizes. The work is often impacted by seasons, and weather. We don’t like being booked out far in advance, but prefer to keep our client list tidy. Generally we are available for quick turnaround on small jobs. Feel free to reach out and see what we’ve got cooking if you have a large project in mind.

Do you operate year round?

We admire the bears that crawl in their dens in the fall and just wait till spring returns. But, we also love a crisp winter morning and those bright moonlit nights. Our work patterns and productivity shift with the seasons but like the beavers, we tend to stay busy year round.

How do we get started?

Drop us a line. When we have cell phone or internet service we’ll get back to you. We are easy going and more interested in working with like minded folks in the wilderness than siphoning your bank account. We tend to get a little excited about projects, but once we settle down we can gather the information we’ll need to provide an estimate or quote depending on the situation. Site visits are usually part of the initial phase to make sure we aren’t getting our easts and wests mixed up.
